2011 Summer Institute on Design Thinking at the Prospect Sierra School

August 10-12, 2011

Do you want to bring “21st century skills” - like critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication - into your classroom or school? Do you want to prepare your students thrive in an uncertain world? If so, this is the workshop for you!

What is Design Thinking?

Design Thinking is a methodology, developed at places like IDEO and the Stanford d.school, that teaches individuals to creatively solve problems. It challenges students to combine empathy, creativity and rationality to meet user needs and create successful solutions. Students are taught to defer judgment early in the process, which reduces fear of failure and encourages creativity and thinking outside the box.

About Prospect Sierra:

Prospect Sierra is an independent K-8 school in the San Francisco Bay Area. In El Cerrito on two campuses, Prospect Sierra provides an academically rich and rigorous curriculum grounded in the values of service, innova- tion, engagement, and curiosity to spark students’ passions, which they will continue to develop throughout their lives.

About the leaders:

Mark Basnage: is the Director of Academic Technology and Innovation at the Prospect Sierra School and founded MakeKnowledge, which connects teachers and schools with resources for innovation. His masters degree from Stanford is in Learning, Technology, and Design, where he was an active part of the d.school community.

Coeylen Barry: Is a former lecturer at the Stanford d.school. She has worked with schools around the world to bring Design Thinking into the classroom. She is also the founder of KDT consulting which works with schools, businesses and non-profits to use design thinking to create innovative solutions.

In addition, we'll meet additional Prospect Sierra faculty/administrators and a "panel of doers" who have experience in design thinking in the classroom.

The $600 fee covers all three days, plus lunches and all materials.
